This delightful little café closer to home is a warm welcome during these winter months. But it was the promise of that famous Prana Chai by Minichilli and Conti that really drew me and a befuddled K to The Merchant’s Guild on a chilly Sunday morning.
True to its reputation, my Prana Chai was amazing. I’ve never had anything like it before, and I have a feeling that I’ll soon find myself with a huge bag for home. There was just an amazing and complex blend of spices and the taste was strong but balanced. K’s cold pressed juice was also very enjoyable and refreshing.
My pick of the day was actually from their specials menu and I completely forgot to write down the name of the dish but it was a lamb cassoulet with poached eggs and sourdough. The cassoulet was full of rich flavour, which is complemented very nicely by the dollops of sour cream. I do wish that there was more than just one slice of sourdough though – the general rule for me is the more bread the better!
K’s eggs panzanella was also quite delicious – he particularly like the torn bread and the dry cured ham (or jamon). The addition of the white anchovies and cherry tomatoes really elevated the dish by adding extra pops of flavour to the lovely toasty bread.
Merchants Guild is definitely a not-so-hidden gem outside of the inner city that I think will likely be a Sunday staple for me. The menu is extensive and quite interesting (I’m looking at you, Super Salad) and there’s no doubt I’ll be returning for another Prana Chai soon.
