Hi all, K here with another guest blog. In case you didn’t know, Judy and I grew up in Canberra and we’ve been keeping a keen eye on the burgeoning food scene there. Over the holiday period I had a few days in Canberra while Judy was travelling and took the opportunity to try as many places as I could.
Autolyse is a bakery and café located in Braddon, one of the hubs of Canberra’s expanding food scene. Most of the interior space is taken up by the impressive ovens and kitchens which are filled all day with the freshly made bread, rows upon rows of waiting sandwiches and a lovely cast of chefs and bakers. This does limit the seating space somewhat and a long line quickly develops but I think the atmosphere is well worth it.
The coffee is as good as any I have had in Melbourne although I would have liked to see a few more specialty brewing methods on the menu (especially my beloved cold drip).
To accompany it I couldn’t look past the brioche French toast with yogurt. It came out looking absolutely delicious, with a good thick cut of the richest brioche I have ever had. I am certain that if the traditional maple syrup had come with the dish I wouldn’t have been able to eat more than half but the yogurt and berries added a perfect amount of freshness and acidity to balance the dish – definitely one of the best French toasts I have ever had.
A friend of mine can never say no to a burger and, true to form, ordered a bacon egg and beef burger which he thoroughly enjoyed. The egg was cooked perfectly, there were generous portions of bacon and the patty was juicy and flavourful.
Another friend decided to simply sample Autolyse’s famous sourdough with jam. It came out piping hot with that wonderful crunch to the edge but the soft elasticity in the middle that exemplifies good bread. He’s definitely a tough customer to please but couldn’t hide a smile as he bit into his freshly baked toast.
Finally, I spotted a dish on my first trip that I had to go back for – sautéed mixed mushrooms on sourdough toast – I’m a sucker for mushrooms and given my friends reaction to the sourdough I knew I had to try it for myself. It did not disappoint. The mixture of mushrooms was perfectly cooked and the sourdough as fresh as promised.
You can be drawn to Autolyse by the bustling atmosphere but you’ll definitely stay for the delicious food. They also have a juice bar one store over and provide wholesale and catering services as well. It’s definitely a must-stop for any travellers moving through Canberra.
Til next time!
