Aoba

Aoba

279 Glenferrie Rd Malvern, VIC 3144

After-work catch-ups over delicious food – always a good idea. A friend suggested Aoba, a little Japanese restaurant in Malvern with barely enough room to sit down, but makes up for it with its excellent selection of affordable food.

Aoba Dinner Set ($25) – 2 spring rolls, 2 pork dumplings, 3 pieces agedashi tofu, 6 pieces sashimi, miso soup and a choice of main dish (teriyaki chicken)

The Aoba dinner set is enough to feed 2 people, or one very hungry K. It’s excellent if you want to try a little bit of everything. I really loved the agedashi tofu, which were full of flavour with the perfect crispy outer layer. I was also very impressed with the freshness of the sashimi, particularly the salmon.

Aoba Box ($16) – Miso soup, seaweed salad, spring roll, gyoza, veg croquette and choice of main dish (teriyaki fish)

Again, a great selection if you want to try a few different items. The serving of fish looked quite generous, and the little piece that I tried tasted pretty great too!

Pork katsu curry ($15.50) – Japanese style curry with pork or chicken cutlets (pork)

This was a massive serving of katsu curry. The gravy was thick and flavourful, while the pork katsu was super crunchy without being overcooked – just the way I like it. My only criticism is that I would’ve preferred more vegies in the curry, but the fresh salad on the side helped counteract the richness of the dish.

Our waitress apologised profusely for the collapsed ice cream, but it really didn’t matter considering how amazing it tasted. Full of pure matcha flavour and super smooth, I only wish they sold it in pints to take-away!

Aoba may not look like much from the outside, but it’s really a gem of a Japanese restaurant. Service is friendly and prompt, the food is high quality and affordable, and I’m already looking forward to my next visit.
