Stokers Fine Pancakes

Stokers Fine Pancakes

231 Clarendon St South Melbourne, VIC 3205

With so many great cafés and restaurants in South Melbourne, it’s hard to stand out, but Stokers Fine Pancakes certainly does a great job of distinguishing itself with their famous pancake chips. K and I discovered this little place over a year ago, when we had a great meal of burgers with a side of their specialty chips. I’ve been itching to return ever since, so when some friends also expressed interest, I jumped on the opportunity.

Cold Brew ($4)

Spicy Potato Pancakes ($17.50) – Cocktail potatoes cooked with red and green chilli, mustard seeds, cumin, turmeric and onions wrapped in pancakes served with side salad

This sounded great on paper, but was unfortunately a huge disappointment. I’m not sure if it was intentional, but the potato filling in our dish was strangely bitter as well as being underseasoned and flavourless. There certainly wasn’t much of a chilli kick and the consensus amongst the entire table was a big thumbs down.

Beef Bolognese Pancakes ($17.50) – Pancakes with beef Bolognese with melted tasty cheese and side salad

Our friends shared the beef Bolognese pancakes, which would have been our pick of savoury pancake had we not opted for the spicy potato. It had good flavour and they enjoyed it much more, although I don’t think they were really blown away.

Caramel Pears ($16) – Soft poached pears atop pancakes drizzled with salted caramel sauce

This sweet dish was amazing and disappeared in a matter of seconds. The pears were beautifully poached, and the pancakes were somewhere in between a crepe and a traditional pancake. I loved the salted caramel drizzled over the top, which really enhanced the sweetness of the pears.

Stokers Pancake Chips ($7 for small) with side of garlic parsley mayo, Spicy Potato Pancakes, Caramel Pears

This was definitely the game-changer – crispy strips of deep fried pancake, lightly seasoned and far superior to their potato counterparts. I’d easily eat a large serving all by myself, and the fact that it’s unique to this café makes it all the more special.

By the end of our meal, we were faced with a dilemma – the pancake chips were so good that K said he’d happily rate them 4.5/5, yet our potato pancakes were an utter let-down. But, given that our caramel pears was delicious, and the burgers from our last visit were also great, I think we’re willing to put our bad dish down to a poor ordering. We’d definitely still be happy to return to try out some more of the sweet options, and will now know to stay away from those potatoes!

xx Judy
