Axil Coffee Roasters

Axil Coffee Roasters

322 Burwood Rd Hawthorn, VIC

Not only is Axil Coffee Roasters widely known as one of Melbourne’s top specialty coffee venues, it’s also a hugely popular brunch destination owing to its huge, brightly lit space, friendly staff and consistently delicious food. I finally got around to making a visit with some friends recently, and even though the café was packed out, the four of us were seated after only a 15 minute wait. The menu was a great mix of savoury and sweet options, with some interesting variations on café classics, and there were definitely a number of dishes that I wanted to try.

Great, strong flat white for me while K and his friend both gave their choices a big tick of approval.

Manchego cheese croquettes with paprika fried eggs, Jamón Serrano, pickled chilli salsa, corn puree queso fresco and chipotle mayonnaise ($20)

I loved these croquettes so much I probably could have eaten a whole bowl of them. Their creamy, cheesy filling paired perfectly with the saltiness of the Jamón, and the fresh salsa helped to cut through all the richness. Perfectly balanced and very delicious.

Chipotle pulled pork with potato rosti, red pepper hollandaise, poached eggs and salsa ($22)

Tender pulled pork with an amazing red pepper hollandaise which had a surprising curry-like flavour to it. The potato rosti was fantastic – as it was made from very thin strips of potato, it wasn’t overly dense and acted as a great substitute for bread.

Smashed avocado with Meredith feta, Murray River salt, mint, parsley and lemon ($16.50)

A very generous serving of freshly smashed avocado on toast – our vegan friend loved it!

Dill cured ocean trout with salted egg yolk, pickled samphire, heirloom beetroots, young celery, Huon Lame salmon caviar and saffron mayonnaise ($22)

This was definitely one of the more interesting dishes on the menu, although I’m not so sure that it quite hit the spot with my friend owing to the lack of carbohydrates. Regardless, the trout was very fresh and delicious, and the presentation looked great.

I was very impressed with my first visit to Axil Coffee Roasters – it certainly lived up to its reputation of great coffee and fantastic food. Both K and I really enjoyed our dishes and I’m very glad to have this café so close to home – I know for sure that I’ll be returning to try out some more of the menu, in particular their famous red velvet pancakes!

xx Judy
