Hash Specialty Coffee & Roasters

113 Hardware St Melbourne, VIC 3000

Home of the famous fairy floss hot chocolate, Hash Specialty Coffee & Roasters is one of many popular cafés located along Melbourne’s famous Hardware Street. Dark walls and light wood fill the space, lit up with beaker lights hung precariously from the ceiling. The effect is cool and hipster without being over-the-top, although a touch more natural light would be nice.

Hash Hot Chocolate ($6) – Mork 85% dark chocolate brewed to perfection, served with fairy floss

Having seen this on my Instagram feed for many months now, I just had to try it myself – bitter dark chocolate that instantly melts the gossamer-like fairy floss to make the perfect hot chocolate – not too sweet and insanely rich.

Ox Tongue Sandwich ($17.50) – Twice cooked ox tongue, Dijon aioli, watercress and red onion jam on a toasted brioche bun

Super tender pieces of ox tongue, full of flavour and complemented by the aioli and onion jam. I really liked this dish and only wish there was a side of chips or salad to accompany it.

Chorizo and Scallops ($19.50) – Chorizo, seared scallops, fried egg, chilli and white bean spread on toasted sourdough

To be honest I was a little disappointed by this dish, featuring only 3 tiny scallops and some chorizo with a fried egg on sourdough. While the scallops were nicely seared, they just didn’t hit the mark and I found the white bean spread to be on the bland side.

Even though there were hits and misses, we all liked our meal at Hash – the waiters were lovely and it was a nice place to relax and catch up. The food wasn’t exceptional, but was still very enjoyable and let’s not forget that amazing hot chocolate!

xx Judy
