Porgie and Mr Jones

Porgie and Mr Jones

291 Auburn Rd Hawthorn, VIC 3122

Another week, another delicious brunch. This time the destination was Porgie and Mr Jones, a lovely café located in Hawthorn that looks deceptively small from the outside, but opens up to a large, open backyard filled with an eclectic array of wooden chairs and tables. The menu is an interesting mix of classic Melbourne breakfasts as well as a small selection of more sophisticated dishes for lunch and dinner.

Strawberry and salted caramel milkshakes

I have a strong dislike for strawberry milkshake but it just happens to be K’s favourite – unfortunately for him, it’s more often than not disappointing, either by being too artificial in flavour and/or too sweet. The latter was definitely the case this time, and I drank my own salted caramel version, which was delicious, with just a smidge of smugness.

Pork and prawn ($21.50) – steamed and roasted pork belly with seared prawns, salad of beans, corn, tendrils and salsa verde

The perfectly cooked prawns and the pops of salsa verde were definitely the highlights of this dish for me. While the pork was lovely and tender, the crackling was just not quite crispy enough, but I was very happy with the serving size and the quality of the ingredients.

Barramundi ($22) – with lyonnais potatoes, peas and chunky tartare

Barramundi is one of my favourite fish to eat, and this version was absolutely delicious. The fish wasn’t overcooked despite the nice crispy skin, and I adored the sweet, caramelised onions and potatoes. The pop of freshness from the baby peas and tartare finished off the dish perfectly.

McPorgie ($6) – English muffin stuffed with ham off the bone, Emmental cheese and creamy dreamy scrambles

One of the café’s signature dishes, this is a truly indulgent breakfast sandwich filled to the brim with cheesy goodness. While the first few bites were heavenly, both K and I found it a bit too heavy to finish by the end, but perhaps it would’ve been a different story had we not ordered so much other food!

It was fantastic to see the selection of simple, yet refined dishes available at Porgie and Mr Jones in addition to the usual burgers and breakfast items, especially when they are as delicious and well thought-out as the ones that we tried. The staff were very friendly and I certainly look forward to returning in the future to see what else the menu has to offer!

xx Judy
