Horse on Heels
50 Rose St Fitzroy, VIC 3065
In Melbourne where amazing food can be found at every street corner, it’s hard to stand out as a budding restaurant or café. The newly opened Horse on Heels has certainly done that for me, with their thematic menu based entirely on variations of waffles, both savoury and sweet. Located on an inconspicuous side street in Fitzroy, its minimalistic décor and spacious outside courtyard is perfect for enjoying some freshly-made waffles on the weekend.
One of the items on the menu I was particularly excited about was their taro latte. I was a little disappointment with the colour of my drink, which was oddly grey and bland looking, but it tasted just like a warm version of taro milk tea, not overly sweet and with a decent hit of taro flavour. With matcha being the flavour of the moment, I can certainly see taro taking over in the near future.
The café serves 3 different types of waffles – a standard Belgian Leige, a sweet coconut pandan and a savoury gluten-free flaxseed. Each of the dishes are built around one particular type of waffle, in addition to the option of building your own.
Tender popcorn chicken, perfected paired with the chimichurri sauce, which was vibrant and delicious. The coconut waffle was also nice and fluffy with a crispy edge all around and a subtle pandan flavour that I enjoyed.
Flavourful pork belly atop a fresh slaw – a very pretty dish indeed. It would’ve been nice to see some crispy crackling in this dish but it was otherwise very tasty.
My main criticism of both dishes is the choice of a sweet waffle for an otherwise savoury dish – while the coconut pandan waffle was delicious, I found that the sweetness detracted from the flavours of both dishes – perhaps replacing with the flaxseed option would be an improvement?
That being said, both K and I really liked the concept and the food at Horse on Heels. The waffles are excellent and I’d definitely love to return to try some out some more of the menu!
