Hunky Dory

Hunky Dory

252 Clarendon St South Melbourne, VIC 3205

Far different from the traditional greasy fish and chip shop, Hunky Dory is a modernised version of the local take-away that we all grew up with. Priding itself on fresh seafood, wholesome salads and healthier alternatives alongside the classics, it’s definitely one of my favourite locations for a casual meal with friends.

Range of salads

In addition to the usual Greek, garden and slaw salads, there are also some fancier options – the black rice with roasted peppers zucchini, feta and pomegranate seeds is hearty enough to fill the stomach but much lighter than a side of chips.

Salt and pepper calamari with sweet potato chips and garden salad ($20.20)

Some of the best calamari I have ever had, perfectly tender, lightly battered and not too greasy. I loved the crunchy sweet potato fries and the fresh salad, all of which made for a fantastic meal.

The Port ($13) – Fillet of flake, 2 prawn cutlets, seafood stick, chips, lemon and tartare

Even though K opted for a classic fish and chips, it was clear that a lot of care had been taken to prepare this dish. The batter was super crunchy and not soggy at all, and I was very impressed with the beautiful large prawns that were included.

The whole range of options at Hunky Dory means there’s something to suit everyone, from grilled and fries seafood to delicious salads and burgers. Most importantly, the ingredients are high quality and fresh, and this is reflected in the taste of the food. Definitely worth a visit!
