Fancy Hanks

Level 1, 79 Bourke St Melbourne, VIC 3000

K and I were very recently lucky enough to be invited to the newly opened Fancy Hanks in the city to celebrate the opening of the restaurant and get a taste of their great food. Boasting a menu centred on all-American BBQ and tender smoked meats, we were more than excited to see what Fancy Hanks had to offer.

The venue itself is large, spacious and bustling with activity. I was particularly impressed with our waitress, who was lovely and helped us to order a great selection of the restaurant’s most popular dishes.

Pork Ribs Whole Rack ($60 for 600g) – Free-range, black Berkshire pig with paprika, black pepper, BBQ glaze

These ribs were seriously some of the best I’ve ever had – full of smoky flavour, the sauce was sticky and coated the perfectly cooked ribs. Dipped into the house-made chilli, it was finger-lickingly good!

Keep in mind that the restaurant only has certain sizes of the ribs (by weight) as they have to be prepared ahead of time, which means that there may not always be the right amount to accommodate everyone. K and I were lucky to have gotten this 600g rack, which I initially was a little apprehensive about, but turned out to be the perfect amount to be shared between the two of us.

Baked Mac ‘N Cheese, black olives ($13)

I’m not a big fan of olives so I definitely didn’t expect to like this dish, but it was surprisingly good! I appreciated that the olive flavour was quite mild and not at all overpowering, yet still managing to add a twist to the classic mac and cheese.

Buttermilk biscuit ($4 each)

Probably my favourite thing from the meal, these biscuits were super crumbly, buttery and absolutely delicious paired with maple cream.

Coleslaw, Kentucky style ($12)

A refreshing side to round off the meal, this coleslaw is nothing like the heavy, sickly sweet version that we’re used to. Instead, the vegies were fresh and crunchy, the dressing light and with the perfect balance of acidity and sweetness.

Apple and caramel pie with cream ($12)

A good old fashioned pie – I loved the soft, caramelised chunks of apple with the cream, but wished that the pie was served warm instead of at room temperature – would have made it all the better!

We had a great time celebrating the launch of Fancy Hanks and really loved the food, all of which was packed full of delicious flavour. It’s definitely a fantastic choice if you love American BBQ, some beer on the side and a good time with mates.
